Retinue League

The 5th Companions Retinue League kicked off this Saturday with the simple task of shooting to see how good each archer was, recording the scores and then the new retinue captains could use the scores for guidance and divvy up the teams.  Each archer was allowed six arrows at twenty five paces distance to shoot at the target that was simply A4 sized pieces of paper with a black disc of 8 inches in diameter.  One point was scored for hitting the paper and three points for hitting the black disc.  Easy peasy.  Seeing as we had three teams named after our three fictional outlaws (Adam Bowyer a.k.a the Bowyers, Gilbert Fletcher a.k.a. the Fletchers and Thomas Stringfellow a.k.a. the Stringfellows) we asked that each archer step up and announce their medieval outlaw name which should consist of their first name followed by their place of birth or their occupation.  Most notable among these colourful names were Nick the Fool, Kevin the Magnificent and Rachel the System Programmer a.k.a. Rachel the Geek.  For the Retinue captains we had two volunteers (Hels will be captain of the Stringfellows and Jenni will be captain of the Bowyers) with the highest scoring archer, John, a.k.a. John the Bard becoming captain of the Fletchers.  For the mercenaries we have two known volunteers Dave A. and Andrew a.k.a. le Chat.  Unfortunately starting with the outlaw theme a bit too early someone half inched my clip board with the teams on them – so if you’ve got it either e-mail the teams lists or let me know where I can pick the clipboard up!  (e-mail webadmin@companionsofthelongbow.co.uk)

When I’ve got the final lists I’ll e-mail the selected sheriff’s stooges from each team and one from the mercenaries (who must perform badly enough to help their team lose but not so obviously bad that they get found out!)  The team games kick off next week with some long distance shooting with our first outlaw: Hereward the Wake.

Kat’s Mum’s Visit

Thanks to our archers who performed admirably during the demonstrations for Kat’s Mum’s Group.  Hopefully you didn’t get too bored carrying out rolling volley after rolling volley.

Tuesday Practice

Sherwood Forest stick fighting practice for those going to Sherwood Forest (and those who aren’t but just feel like having a laugh) will be at 7.00pm this Tuesday 20th May at Roves.  I understand we’re still looking for cheap quarter staves so if you’ve got anything resembling a quarterstaff bring it along for evaluation.

And Finally …

Don’t forget the first regular mid-week shoot kicks off on Wednesday 21st May with a start time of 6.30pm.

Congratulations to Clive for gaining a rank in the Companions Trophy.  He goes from Under Forest 3rd rank to Foot Forester 2nd rank.  You can check out the Week 20 scores in the Members Area.

As always … got a suggestion for the club?  Send it to suggestions@companionsofthelongbow.co.uk or send them direct to any of the committee members e-mail address (see Contact Us page for these).   There’s also a Suggestions box in the first shed (look inside the door, it’s marked up with “Suggestions”) so please write something and pop it in there if you want to remain anonymous.
