Companions Trophy

Lat Saturday was Week 1 of the new Companions Trophy competition.  In keeping with the rules laid down listed previously (click here for members can view the rules in the Members Area), the first game was based on a straight forward 20 yard range shoot at a 60cm FITA target.  Scoring was 5 points for a gold through to 1 for a white, six arrows per archer and the highest scorer getting 1st place following down through to the 5th placed archer.  First place was shared by Nigel and Mark who both scored 22 out of 30 and so both gain 10 points towards the 60 necessary to qualify for the final Week 27 shoot off.  The full table listing has been updated in the Members Area.

If you missed the first week don’t worry too much as there’ll be plenty of opportunities to get points in the coming six months.

And Finally...

As always … got a suggestion for the club?  Send it to suggestions@companionsofthelongbow.co.uk or send them direct to any of the committee members e-mail address (see Contact Us page for these).  Our Suggestions box will be up and ready to use as soon as we’ve got use of the Roundel field again.

Companions Challenge

This week’s Challenge was a repeat of “Challenge Number 8 – Shooting A Boiled Egg Suspended on a Thread”,  For those who don’t know (or remember) this challenge was last undertaken back in November 2006 and was based on a short clip of Korean archers shooting Soya beans suspended on threads.  Click here to see the original clip.

We made this a little bit easier by swapping the Soya bean for an egg and giving each archer three arrows to hit it.  After last week’s long and arduous explanation this one was a doddle to explain, eh?  So how did we do?

Well we’re currently running at four successes to three failures … and now we can say we’ve got five successes to three failures as two archers hit the egg.  Andy won the prize of dubious worth this week which was a set of tea towels embroidered with the name “Tererife”.  A real prize of dubious worth.  Well done Andy.

Next week’s challenge is inspired by the latest addition to our archer’s excuses (No. 52 – members can check out the every growing list in the Members Area) and will involve a bit of popinjay.

Companions Christmas Party

Barn Shoot – Wednesday 12th December 7.30pm at Roves Farm

Barns.  Everyone knows barns are used as storing buildings for hay, grains, farm equipment and used as shelter for livestock.  If you’re thinking barns are cold, dark, unwelcoming and that barn in December and a Companions party make unusual bedfellows, fear not!  The barn we’re going to be using is the one attached to the Roves Farm visitors centre.  It’s large enough to shoot in, it’s got electricity, it has toilets attached to it and it even has heaters.  In fact it’s primarily used as a large children’s play area so it comes with the one thing every parent yearns for when looking after small children – seats.

Interested now?  For your festive fun we’re planning;

A Festive Christmas Shoot – plenty of Christmas related targets for you to destroy.

Hot Food – The type of food (with vegetarian options etc) will now be confirmed once we know the numbers!

Drinks – Drinks of the soft variety although “bring a bottle” if you want.  The golden rule about alcohol will be “Beers out, bows away” so get your shooting done before quaffing your favourite tipple.

A Quiz – Dave B. has now agreed to set a contemporary quiz.  It’ll be a printed question sheet that you can pick up and fill out at your leisure during the course of the evening.  You can enter on your own or get a team together and enter.  We’ll collect the your answer sheets near the end, score them up and award a prize!

A Raffle – With more prizes!

Music – Cheesy Christmas music is mandatory, although if you want to bring along a disc or two of your own music to share, feel free.

Fancy Dress – Option and there’s no theme!  Medieval if you want (because we suspect some of us have now got costumes that fit the medieval tag) but if you’ve been dying to wear that Elvis or Spiderman outfit that’s been hanging sadly in your wardrobe since the turn of the Millennium, now’s your chance to wear it again.  Remember, fancy dress is optional so you don’t have to dress up if you don’t want to.

Costs?  The normal shooting fee will be levied (£4) to cover the hire of the facilities and the cost of the food and drink.  Interested?  Helen will be e-mailing you shortly so we can gauge numbers, buy in refreshments and make the targets.

New Committee Members

Congratulations to Ade and Stuart who have been nominated and accepted as committee members.  Their names and contract details will be posted up in the Contact Us page following the next committee meeting.

Range Captains

For those who missed it, range captain qualifications continue again next week.  This week Ian and Russell qualified (or re-qualified in Russell’s case) and so their names have been added to the approved Captains on the Membership page.  For those who don’t yet know, Range Captains will have to sign and date the current Companions Safety Case just to show they’ve read it and understand the safety procedure.  Be prepared sometime in the near future for the Safety Officer to accost you and demand your autograph.

Scrapheap Challenge – The Latest News

There’s a slight possibility that one of the two 2006 Summer Road Shows featuring out 2006 Companions team with Bad Neighbour 2 will be show in December.

Current TV listings show that Scrapheap Challenge runs through to the 23rd December and next week (Sundayt 2nd December) is the Grand Final of the current series.  This leaves three weeks for them to possibly show two years worth of the Scrapheap Road Shows they’ve been saving up!  If anyone has any better TV listing they should look out for the road show that was filmed at the 2006 Great Dorset Steam Fair, specifically the Welly Wanging Scrapheap competition.  Who knows, the waiting could be over and we might get our 4 milliseconds of TV fame after all!

Paintballing

Rachel has been organising a paint balling session for the afternoon of the 15th December 2007 at Roves Farm.  At the moment she has around 18 people interested  (so there will be no shortage of targets to aim for!)  but if you know anyone else who would like to go and have not yet told her then please let her know at the next shoot or e-mail care of webadmin@companionsofthelongbow.co.uk .

The costs are £15 per person which includes 200 paintballs and additional paintballs can then be purchased at £5 per 100.
